A Crisis of Governance Is Emerging in Faith-Based Institutions 

 Many religious organisations and faith-based NGOs are operating under increasing pressure and growing scrutiny amid a rapidly evolving regulatory environment. Without proactive governance, compliance, and risk (GRC) management, the very mission of these institutions is at risk. 

• Outdated or unclear constitutions and governance structures create confusion, internal conflict, and legal vulnerability.
   
• Neglected compliance obligations—including POPIA, SARS, labour law, and the NPO Act leave institutions exposed to fines, investigations, and even deregistration.
   
• Weak financial controls and opaque donation management threaten public trust and invite reputational damage, both locally and internationally.
   
• Leadership is increasingly exposed to personal liability for failures in oversight, accountability, and compliance.
   
• Donors, funders, and congregations now demand transparency, ethical stewardship, and clear governance—or they walk away.
   
• Government authorities are tightening oversight of non-compliant religious institutions. Without demonstrable self-governance, the risk of regulatory intervention, including audits, suspensions, and trustee removal, is rising sharply.
   

Without robust GRC systems, institutions risk reputational harm, legal penalties, and weakened credibility with the very people they are called to serve.
